FAQ

Honey & Hive Products

Why has my honey turned solid or “gritty”? Don’t worry—this is a natural process called granulation. All pure honey will granulate; some within a week and some not for several years. It is actually a sign of purity! To liquify it, simply place the container in very hot water (not boiling) and let it stand until it returns to its liquid state.

How much work goes into a single jar of honey? It’s a true miracle of nature. To make just one pound of honey, honeybees fly approximately 80,000 miles and visit up to 2 million flowers to gather 4 lbs of nectar. When you buy local, you are supporting that incredible effort.

Where can I find Valhalla honey if the shop is closed? Our honey is stocked at several local retailers across the region, including Hy-Vee, Russ’s Market, and Super Saver.

Beekeeping & Winter Care

How do I prepare my bees for the Nebraska winter? Once the autumn foliage dies off, it is vital to feed your bees to ensure they are robust enough to survive the cold months ahead. Start by providing a 2:1 sugar syrup while temperatures allow. As the weather turns colder, transition to Winter Patties for continued nourishment. We highly recommend these patties to keep your colony healthy; simply lay them directly on top of the brood chamber frames for easy access. We keep these in stock at the store!

What equipment do I need for the honey harvest? Harvesting is the most rewarding part of the season, but you need the right tools to do it efficiently. We carry everything you need, including:

  • Fume Boards & Bee Go

  • Bee Escapes & Bee Escape Boards

  • Uncapping tools and extractors
